Welcome from the Rabbi

Rabbi David Barnett began his post-graduate rabbinical training through study in the pilot Midreshet Yerushalayim intensive study program under the auspices of JTS in Jerusalem, Israel in 1978-79.  He continued formal study in the Rabbinical program initially at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and then went on to receive rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1986.  He had the distinction of serving as Assistant Rabbi at Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley, PA, and subsequently served in various congregational Rabbinic and Cantorial positions in Southern California for over two decades.

During that time, he found great meaning by functioning as a life cycle specialist in conjunction with several large Jewish mortuaries, helping thousands of families deal with the shock of loss and bereavement, while emphasizing the enduring inspiration, meaning, and legacy of all whose lives were truly celebrated.

Since 2011, Rabbi Barnett has both deepened and broadened the range of his rabbinic experience by serving a number of congregations in the capacity of interim rabbi, and through this work has helped to strengthen and solidify many congregations through periods of great transition and change.

Rabbi Barnett studied classical violin starting at age 8 and classical guitar at age 15. Since that time, with the addition of formal vocal and cantorial training, music has remained a vital part of his life.  He was honored to study with and become a disciple of Cantors Joseph Frankel and Alan Michelson, z”l, of Mercer Is., WA, and Los Angeles, CA, respectively.  He is looking forward to sharing his developed talents and skills in meaningful and special ways in his next rabbinic venue of service.
